It’s been three years since we’ve had a Square Enix E3 press conference. Does this comeback mean that the Square Enix E3 showcase rocked our socks off? No. It didn’t. Aside from a few exciting reveals, this showcase didn’t live up to its expectations.
The Square Enix E3 showcase had us like “WTF was that?”
The Square Enix E3 showcase was basically a YouTube playlist with cool trailers and teaser game reveals. Nothing extravagant. Nothing flashy. The showcase kicked off with a “One with the Jungle” Shadow of the Tomb Raider gameplay reveal. From there, the conference went into ‘play it safe’ mode. The Avengers project and Final Fantasy 7 Remake were missing in action. Instead, Square Enix revealed two brand new IPs, with little to no information. Expectations were high for Kingdom Hearts 3, and even those weren’t met in this particular conference.

Despite our disappointment, we’re here to break it down for you. Bring your level of excitement down a notch, and let’s jump into this recap written by Gabriel Delpino, Brandon Lopez, and Ignacio Palacio.
One of the few surprises at the Square Enix E3 showcase was Babylon’s Fall. It’s a new IP being developed by Platinum Games. From the trailer and detailed inspection, the game will revolve around an unknown energy called Oversoul and the world’s populace fighting over it. The elder gods, disgusted with humanity’s unwillingness to learn from their past mistakes, unleash their wrath upon the world. Gaia creates a new world to give humanity one last chance. Fights continue to happen and Gaia unleashes judgment upon humanity once again. A group of Nomads then rise up to strike back at Gaia.
Babylon’s Fall is slated to release in 2019 for PlayStation 4 and Steam.
Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age has finally been confirmed for the U.S. Dragon Quest 11 has been a huge success overseas in Japan, selling 3 million copies by the end of 2017. Square Enix showed us a lengthy trailer showcasing the game. Dragon Quest 11 will be available September 4th, 2018 on PlayStation 4 and Steam. There is also a collector’s edition for the game titled Edition of Lost Time up for pre-order exclusively on the Square Enix store. That edition will be exclusive to PlayStation 4.
Final Fantasy XIV x Monster Hunter World Crossover Event
With the recent release of their Under the Moonlight patch, Square Enix decided to give us a look into their next update. Partnering up with Capcom, Final Fantasy XIV and Monster Hunter World will cross-over, each bringing content from their respective games into the other. Final Fantasy XIV will be receiving the content such as the wyvern Rathalos, the companion palicoes, and the potion drinking animations from the Monster Hunter series. We’re sure more information is to come. This cross-over event will start later this summer.
Just Cause 4
Adrenaline-fueled Rico Rodriguez is back in Just Cause 4 and he will be going up against the Black Hand. Just Cause 4 will include major upgrades to it’s sandbox world. Extreme weather changes such as massive tornadoes, forked lightning, devastating sandstorms, and chilling blizzards will be environmental hazards the players will have to be careful around. Avalanche Studios has completely overhauled Rico’s grapple hook. It’ll be more intuitive for players new to the franchise. The grapple will feature more tethers and various customization options than ever before.
Just Cause 4 will launch December 4, 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Steam.
Kingdom Hearts 3
The game that was a part of three press conferences at this years E3, Kingdom Hearts 3, made waves around the gaming world. There’s a lot of info surrounding Kingdom Hearts 3, so we’ve decided that a full game E3 recap was in order. Unfortunately, the Square Enix E3 showcase had no information on this title. The only thing shown was an extended cut of a trailer shown at the Xbox E3 press conference.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Square Enix gave the spotlight to Shadow of the Tomb Raider. It kicks off by showcasing the beginning cutscenes of the game, showing a panicky Lara Croft attempting to crash land the airplane she’s piloting. Daniel Chayer-Bisson, Senior Game Director at Eidos Montreal, describes that Laura will have to become “one with the jungle” in order to survive this time around. Introduced in the game are new traversing techniques such as grappling, wall riding, as well as bringing back water exploration. Bisson also mentions that there will be more tombs to raid and they are deadlier than ever.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be releasing September 14, 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. People who preorder the Shadow of the Tomb Raider Croft Steelbook Edition will have 48 Hour early access.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit
DONTNOD Entertainment brings us their latest story in the Life is Strange universe: The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. Captain Spirit is a way to introduce players to the various stories related with the Life is Strange universe. The game will contain links to the story and characters of Season 2. The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit will become available to download for free on June 26th, 2018 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam.
The Quiet Man
The Quiet Man’s trailer is something of a mystery. The Quiet Man is another new IP by Square Enix where you control a seemingly deaf man with powers. Something to note is that during the trailer, there are what appears to be three gang members hanging out in an alley. When the protagonist gets confronted, somehow the third guy appears to be knocked out, laying down behind the protagonist’s feet. The Quiet Man will only be available on PlayStation 4 and Steam, and will be digital-only. More info on the title to come in August.
